Currently, with the use of the Homestart Grant via Kiwisaver, you can get up to $20,000 for two people to put toward building your first home! Take this grant and combine it with any savings you have in Kiwisaver and you have a significant deposit.
A lot of banks require only 10% deposit when you're building your first home.
The house price cap in Christchurch and surrounding areas in Canterbury is $450,000 which is ample to build a nice 3 or 4 bedroom home on a suitable section. Whilst its not quite enough to build a luxury dream home, it will certainly build a nice brand new home and get you into the market.
